100_3029

4. Next add two chopped up candy bars. One with nuts are nice.

5. Add enough water (one tablespoon at a time) to make the icing spreadable.
100_3032

6. The icing can be as thick if you use less water or if you add more powdered sugar.
If it is thick it can be spread with the back of a spoon.

Colonial Dessert

10 07 2009

So what is it all about?
In a time when sugar and chocolate and ice cream were for the rich, most colonial people used what they had for dessert.

Colonial people used what they had, corn, fruit, molasses and maple syrup. To learn more  – go here.

One very good dessert that has survived is Apple Brown Betty.

Apple Brown Betty is an apple dessert with bread crumbs. Modern versions have sugar and cinnamon in them. In colonial times this might not of happened as much or every time.  This dessert is very easy to make and uses very little ingredients which makes it a classic colonial dish.

Another interesting dessert would be Molasses Donuts. Yum is a good word, but molasses, not sure all would like you. In colonial times molasses would be used because sugar was not always available, but in the present time most probably would not be so down with molasses. Want to see a picture of one go here and they did put powdered sugar on the top.

In the summer one can really understand and have an effection for a pie, espically Shoofly Pie. The name comes from shooing the flys aways from the pie.

Shoofly Pie explained (well kind of)

Shoofly Recipe

2 cups chocolate chips

Spread the chocolate on top of the nuts and brownies.

The chocolate moon landscape.

100_2296

Is this the right picture? See the topping it is very hard and candy bar like.

More like a rock. The brownie is soft underneath. That is the trick.

100_2307

Better view. Look quick it will not last long.

100_2313

Not the clearest, oh well. Just get ready for a tough cut on the top part.
